Solar Energy Technology Breakthrough

October 15th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Here’s an excellent video on what solar energy technology breakthroughs can do to our current energy generation pattern.
This video is from a solar energy set-up in Negev Desert of Israel, where the professor is concentrating sunlight using giant mirrors, and then pointing it on to innovative tiny solar panels, which then generate high wattage.

The video mentions that the concave mirror is increasing the sunlight intensity by a 1000 times before throwing it on the tiny solar panels. Professor David says that just 12 square km of such a set-up can produce 1000 MW of power, which is about 10% of Israel’s total energy production capacity.

The video also shows an example of similar Israeli technology being used in the Mojave desert in California/Nevada (we reported this in one of our previous posts), where huge convace mirrors are being used to generate heat for producing steam, which is then used to produce energy using a conventional power generation block (Turbine + Generator + Stepup Transformer). As per the CEO of this project, the solar energy cost will be at 10-12 cents per KHW, and once the investment is recovered, the cost can be drop to a few cents per KHW, making it the cheapest power source.

Photovoltaic cells and certain types of rechargable batteries are also on the verge of verious new breakthroughs. It is a major step toward large scale renewable energy. Clearly, solar energy is becoming mainstream.

Prof. David Faiman is a faculty member at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. It would be nice to mention that he is part of a greater research institute that is dedicated to sustainable development of arid lands.
